Some colors arrive with a trend. Others become part of a product’s identity.

Brown belongs naturally to the visual history of Western boots. It can be found throughout the environment in which Western footwear developed — in soil, timber, saddles, tack and well-used leather. Over time, these earthy tones became closely associated with the character of Western life.
Leather also gives brown an unusual amount of depth.
Rather than appearing completely uniform, brown leather can reveal grain, tonal variation and subtle changes across the surface. Those characteristics allow the material itself to participate in the design.
The women’s boot shown here uses this idea through multiple shades of brown. A lighter foot is balanced by a darker shaft, while flowing embroidery and a star detail introduce recognizable Western references without overwhelming the natural appearance of the leather.
For footwear designers, working within one color family does not necessarily mean creating a simple product. Changes in leather tone, stitching, piping, shaft panels and finishing can create contrast while maintaining a coherent overall appearance.
